Exhibition List

Why are all the works listed as NFS?

People with disabilities are often reliant on disability social benefits. In the artist's case he is under a system called "fleksjob". He went through a long evaluation process where the Danish state investigated how many working hours is considered "full-time" for his disability. This means he is able to work the amount of hours he is physically able to, is given the necessary hours for rest, and receives a state stipend salary that would be equal to working 37 hours per week.

When a person with a disability is given this type of social benefit, they cannot work for themself or own a business registration (known as a CVR number in Denmark). This means that artists on this system may not apply, have any monetary gain from their practice, apply for grants, sell works, etc...

On top of these explicit restrictions, there are many gray areas that artists with disabilities must navigate to continue their practice, while not putting these necessary disability social benefits in jeopardy. For instance, engaging in any public showing where other artists receive money, their involvement can be viewed by social workers as a greater ability to work and they can then raise the artist's working hours at other jobs.
"Anyone can realise that a disabled person working on a spreadsheet on a computer at a desk is different, and requires different levels of energy, than laying in bed and working on my art practice to help cope with my constant pain. The state does not see it this way. These restrictions block me from resources and opportunities to participate in the heavily freelance-natured art field, requires me to have a day job that is expected to fund my naturally higher costs of living from being disabled, and to fund my art practice that can now only exist as a "hobby".
"Since disability and individual disabled experiences are so tied to legally established state support systems, the restrictions and ability of people with disabilities vary greatly based on local and national governments. I encourage everyone to find out more, and familiarise yourself with the experiences and restrictions of artists with disabilities in your area."
- Anthony Dexter Giannelli
