Gozie Ojini:
This piece is the sound element of a multimedia performance called Currents. This past summer I did my first performance in Chicago at Gallery 400. The work was based on the manipulation of liquids with light and sound which was inspired by a performance I saw in LA at the Hammer by Noon Tran (@homeopathicfuqboi) and their collaborator Miles Martinez (@lil_m_) called Duck Standing On One Leg 2019.
The performance is an iteration of another work I made at Skowhegan in 2022, in which I made artificial sweat using edible chemicals and finding an approximation of their ratios in our own sweat. I also sourced ocean water from the Atlantic coast in Maine and fed the solutions to my audience. I kept thinking about the poetics of bringing the ocean across the country, sweat that was made without perspiration, and a sculpture that you could taste and incorporate into your body.
This sound work could not be possible without the support of my friend James Stanciell (@clarion)
Gozie Ojini is an artist working primarily in sculpture and installation. His works employ careful gestures with found objects and readymades to explore ideas about disembodied labor, non-performance, and the alignment of object and subject. He is based in Los Angeles and has recently been accepted to the Yale School of Art as a 2025 Sculpture MFA candidate.
