Mata Art Gallery Presents

Parul ning Kapampangan: Susi ning Pasku
Kapampangan Lantern: The Key to Christmas

Parol-making workshop with Alex J. Cabalu
Sunday, November 16, 2025
1-3:30PM

Secret Garden

3321 Pasadena Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90031

free | all ages | 25 spaces | masks required

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Derived from the Spanish word farol (lantern), the parol is a beloved symbol of light, hope, and community in the Philippines. Its iconic star shape has lit up homes, streets, and hearts during the holidays for generations — especially in the Philippines and the diaspora, where some families begin decorating as early as September.

Join teaching artist Alex J. Cabalu for a hands-on workshop exploring the history and significance of the parol, the environmental climate and resourcefulness of the Philippines, and how to create your own unique parol using recycled and accessible materials — bringing it to life with vibrant designs just in time for the holidays! 🎄
